BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Dayton is re-configuring the college basketball map in Ohio. It no longer runs through Columbus after Vee Sanfords layup with 3.8 seconds left secured 11th-seeded Daytons 60-59 victory over sixth-seeded Ohio State in the second round of the of the NCAA tournament on Thursday. "I guess they called us the little brother, or whatever," Flyers guard Jordan Sibert said. "We cant be called that anymore." Sibert has seen it from both sides after transferring to Dayton following two seasons at Ohio State. "To be able to go out there and play with this group of guys, to be able to come up with this win, its unbelievable," Sibert said. Leave it to another transfer, Sanford, to secure the victory in a back-and-forth game that featured 15 lead changes between two schools separated by some 120 kilometres. After Ohio States Aaron Craft hit a reverse layup with 15.5 seconds remaining, the Flyers set up a play during a timeout with 10.8 seconds left. Dayton inbounded the ball and worked it to Sanford on the right wing. Driving the lane without hesitation, he got a step on Craft and laid in a shot from about four feet away. "No, I wasnt nervous," said Sanford, who transferred to Dayton from Georgetown. "Weve drawn up a play like that, and I messed it up previously. But (coach Archie Miller) just kept his trust in me, and Im just thankful that the shot went in." Sanford finished with 10 points, while Dyshawn Pierre of Whitby, Ont., led Dayton with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. For Miller, in his third year, the win came against his former mentor, Thad Matta. Pierre hit three key free throws to give Dayton a lead with under a minute left. The Flyers (24-10), of the Atlantic-10 Conference, who have won 11 of 13, advance to play Syracuse, the South Regions third seed on Saturday. The Orange routed Western Michigan 77-53 in their second-round game. Its one and done for the Big Ten Conference Buckeyes (25-10), who were eliminated in the first game for only the third time in 26th tournament appearances. This season, Ohio State got off to a 15-0 start, and then stumbled down the stretch, splitting its final 20 games. The loss marked the end for three seniors, including Craft, who were part of a team that had advanced past the third round in each of the previous three years. Craft had a chance to pull out the win. Driving the length of the court on the Buckeyes last possession, Craft bulled his way through three defenders only to have his 10-footer hit off the backboard and roll off the rim as the buzzer sounded. Craft remained on his back in disappointment as the Flyers rushed to celebrate at their bench at the other end of the court. "I just wanted to do everything I could to help our team win, and down the stretch I couldnt do that today," Craft said. "I can take the blame for that." Sam Thompson led Ohio State with 18 points, and Craft scored 16. Craft had no time for questions about whether Dayton can stake claim to being the states better basketball school for one year at least. "Sorry, I have zero thoughts on that right now," he said. "Im upset at the way we played this game, and the way we didnt take the opportunity and make the most of it." Craft was involved in a questionable play when he draped his arms around Sibert and was called for an intentional foul with 2:35 left. Sibert hit both free-throws to put Dayton up 55-52, but the Flyers couldnt score on the ensuing possession. Craft made up for that at the other end, when he was fouled while hitting a 6-footer, and then completed the three-point play. Miller was antsy right up to the final buzzer. Having spent two seasons at Ohio State, he was fully aware of Crafts ability to score clutch baskets. "I thought it was going in," Miller said, referring to Crafts miss at the buzzer. "Ive watched those guys win that game 1,000 times. Hes a bulldozer with the ball. He got it down there in about three dribbles and got a good look. And it ended up rimming out. And we got lucky today." The Flyers have shown a flare for dramatics this season. Sanfords basket marked the third time the Flyers have won a game on a shot in the final 4 seconds. Sibert hit a three-pointer with one second left in an 81-80 win over IPFW on Nov. 9. Then there was Devin Olivers buzzer-beater in an 83-80 overtime win at Ole Miss on Jan. 4. "A lot of people were going to make a big case out of beating Thad, or beating Ohio State," Miller said. "We didnt get real complicated. It wasnt about Ohio State or where theyre from, or blah, blah, blah. It was about us." Air Max 270 Günstig Kaufen . PETERSBURG, Fla. Schuhe Bestellen Großhandel . One was a full on farcical television special and another was a magazine exclusive. Big business. In the NHL many of the top players are signed the day they are available. July 1. Happy Canada Day hockey fans! It is very unusual for a star player to have not found a team by the second day of the month. Major League Baseball takes more time and is currently in the middle of free agent frenzy, a period that starts five days following the World Series and usually runs to some point in January. Occasionally, for some, it continues much longer if they have been extended a qualifying offer, which is linked to a draft pick by their former team that they turned down. For baseball fans the excitement of seeing so many different players linked to different teams is a way to get through the dark days of winter before the magical words pitchers and catchers report to spring training hit the newswire. In the Premier League there is no such fuss. English football is still coming to terms with the idea that an employee can become unattached and free away from its club once the contract ends, something that only became possible in 1995 with the Bosman ruling. There are many differences between the ways the players look at their contracts in English football than in North American sports. Far fewer high-profile footballers go into their final year of a contract and even fewer see it run out completely and those that do can begin to open negotiations with other teams once the January transfer window is open. It is certainly an unusual process. It would be hard to imagine the San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval playing for them in the recent World Series having already agreed to join the Boston Red Sox next season, for example. One thing free agents in any sport have in common is leverage and an ability to get more money than they normally would. In the Premier League, where amounts are given to clubs to purchase players on top of wages, it is clear a players agent can ask for more money per week for his client because they know the club doesnt have to pay a fee for their services. For clubs, though, this can still be a process of bargain buying, so as many shoppers head out around the Black Friday weekend in North America here are five players in the league that could be had for nothing in the next few months. Steven Gerrard – Easily the biggest name available, the Liverpool skipper, much like his club, is having a difficult season. Despite playing every minute of the Premier League season so far questions have arisen about where he is best suited on the field and it looks like its another year of chasing trophies, rather than winning them, for the midfielder. Liverpool fans, of course, want him back and want him to finish his career with one club, but what about Gerrard? His next contract could well be his last and he may decide the time is now to move on. He is a player who could still excel with superior players around him who can take the pressure off and reduce the amount of minutes he plays. Best destination if he leaves – Bayern Munich Why? – Gerrard will not want to play for another Premier League club, being so tied to Liverpool as a club and a community but his legacy on Merseyside would not be altered at all if he moved to Europe for a couple of years to play for a super power like Bayern Munich. The German giants could easily rely on Gerrard to play at a high level against many teams domesttically and use him periodically in European matches.dddddddddddd Winston Reid – The West Ham centre-back is likely on his way from West Ham having failed to come to terms on a new deal with the club. His performances under Sam Allardyce have caught the attention of many teams and in an era where it is very difficult to get a return on a heavy investment on a defender it is not hard to see why teams are interested in one who is a consistent Premier League performer and will soon be a free agent. Best destination if he leaves – Arsenal Why? – Reid is very comfortable in London and staying in the capital while moving to a higher level with the Gunners would be ideal. Arsene Wengers team badly need depth in that position and finding a player of Reids talent without spending money on a large transfer fee is exactly the type of business the club believes in. Ron Vlaar – The Dutchmans stock rose significantly at the World Cup when he was exceptional in a back three and a back four for a side that finished third in Brazil. Vlaar knows, at 29, that the time is now for him to use that to his advantage and move away from Aston Villa, a team that continues to struggle in the bottom half. Despite their struggles, Villa may be wise to take advantage of many teams needing a central defender and sell him for a fee in January instead of losing him for nothing in the summer. Best destination if he leaves – Manchester United Why? – Reunion is the word for Vlaar, which is why he was linked with old boss Ronald Koeman at Southampton last summer but a link up with former national team boss Louis Van Gaal makes more sense. United should be in the market for players better than Vlaar but as they transition towards trying to become a force in European football again a three-year deal would make sense as he is good enough to start for them for the next couple of years and brings leadership qualities the Old Trafford backline certainly misses at the moment. Fabian Delph – Vlaar wont be the only player leaving Villa Park on a free at the end of the season with the English midfielder likely departing in the same manner. Villa fans have seen Delph progress to another level in the past two seasons but having been picked for England that is no longer a secret. Delph, currently out with a shoulder injury, is a big part of the penetration needed in Villas stagnant midfield as he is aggressive and ambitious in his runs with the ball. Best destination if he leaves – Tottenham Why? – A major overhaul is coming at White Hart Lane as new boss Mauricio Pocchetino makes his mark. Currently many big name midfielders are frozen out and young Ryan Mason has been preferred ahead of them but next summer Delph would represent an upgrade over Mason as the likes of Paulinho, Mousa Dembele and Etienne Capoue possibly move on. James Milner – The next few weeks will be very important for the future of the England international. It appears he is now ready to talk about an extension with Manchester City after playing more this season than last but he should think carefully before signing. City are an ambitious club with problems at the moment and if they look to make changes Milner could soon be back out of favour with or without a new contract. Best destination if he leaves – Liverpool Why? – The Reds are usually first in line to purchase English talent and Milner would bring a much-needed work rate to a club that is one of the few teams in England that could get close to the wages he is on at City. Milner is an underrated player who rarely has a bad game but his talent may not be in line with the level his current club wants to reach. ' ' '
Changes to the NHL Draft Lottery were voted in on Thursday by the leagues Board of Governors. According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun, the league still needs to confer with the National Hockey League Players Association before they become official. The league has proposed smoothing or compressing the odds among the 14 non-playoff teams for the 2015 draft and then increasing the number of selections determined by the lottery in 2016. The NHLs general managers met in New York during the Stanley Cup Final and at that time, Sabres general manager Tim Murray told LeBrun that potential new changes would not take effect in time for next years highly anticipated 2015 Draft that will feature Connor McDavid. He was 75. The Spanish football federation announced the death early Saturday, saying Aragones died at a Madrid hospital. He had been battling leukemia. Federation president Angel Maria Villar said Aragones would be remembered as "very special" -- both for his contributions to Spanish football and as a person. "With him we have lived the beginning of an extraordinary phase in football as well as for Spanish society," Villar said. "This has been a painful dawn for our football." Aragones had a successful playing career as a sharpshooting international forward who earned 11 caps for Spain, and then spent the rest of his life as a much-travelled coach. However, he will mostly be remembered for what happened on June 29, 2008, when his team beat Germany 1-0 in Vienna to claim its first major title in 44 years. "Luis Aragones changed the history of Spanish football," Spain captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas said. "And for that we will always be thankful." The Euro 2008 triumph was the culmination of Aragones four-year reign as Spain coach, having taken over a team that for the last 20 years had earned a reputation for always coming up short in major tournaments. But Aragones instilled a new sense of belief in his players, even after losing to France in the second round of the 2006 World Cup. He also made the team adopt the quick-passing "tiki-taka" style of football made famous by Barcelona, and which his players came close to perfecting at Euro 2008. Led by Barcelona midfielders Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta -- and the goalscoring of David Villa -- Spain went undefeated through the tournament, but needed a penalty shootout against Italy to advance from the quarterfinals. While Aragones stepped down after the tournament, the team went on to win its first World Cup two years later and then added an unprecedented third straight major title at Euro 2012 under his successor Vicente del Bosque. "Without a doubt, our current run of success is a result of his legacy," Del Bosque said on Saturday, after paying his respects to Aragones family. "He had a long history of coaching experience and he had a special appreciation for the game." But Aragones time in charge wasnt without controversy. He made a racist slur about France striker Thierry Henry -- who is black -- during a training session in October, 2004, and followed that remark with an outburst about Englands colonial past.dddddddddddd His comments were believed to have prompted ugly racist chants directed at Englands black players during a friendly against Spain in Madrid. The Spanish Football Federation refused to bow to pressure to fire Aragones, although it fined him 3,000 euros, a punishment which many felt was too lenient. Denying he was a racist, Aragones explained that his comment about Henry was an attempt to motivate forward Jose Antonio Reyes, and he received important backing from several black players he had coached previously. In February, 2007, Aragones won a legal appeal against the Spanish Committee for Sporting Disciplines ruling that his behaviour could have fostered "violent, racist or xenophobic acts." Spanish media also often complained about his grouchy demeanour and had regularly called for his dismissal during the two years before the teams triumph. There was another uproar toward the end of 2006 when he dropped the national teams all-time leading scorer and captain, Real Madrids Raul Gonzalez, arguing that he was past his prime. It proved a masterstroke. The team embarked on a 22-game unbeaten run which culminated with the 2008 title, making Aragones the oldest coach to win a European Championship title. Despite the victory, the Spanish federation made no attempt to persuade him to extend his contract and five days later he moved abroad for the first time to take charge of Turkish club Fenerbahce, a couple of weeks before his 70th birthday. "Im leaving because there wasnt more done for me to stay," Aragones said at the time. His playing career began 43 years earlier, when Aragones joined Atletico Madrid. He scored 123 times in 265 games for the team -- the second highest in its history -- and helped the club win three Spanish league titles and two Copa del Reys. It also reached the 1974 European Cup final, where it lost to Bayern Munich in a replay. Aragones, nicknamed "The Sage of Hortaleza" in reference to the Madrid suburb of his birth, was then appointed as Atletico coach and led the team to the 1975 World Club Championship, the 1976 Copa del Rey and the 1977 league title. He coached Atletico on a total of five occasions and he had two spells each at Mallorca and Real Betis. He was also in charge of Barcelona, Espanyol, Sevilla, Valencia and Oviedo in a career total of 757 games, a Spanish league record. Aragones is survived by his wife Pepa, five children and 11 grandchildren. ' ' '

The 36-year-old Argentine player had 10 birdies in his bogey-free round. He played the front nine in 7-under 28 and added birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 17. "I was definitely aware of it (59), but I was just trying to stay in the moment, hit good shots and make good putts," Gomez said through an interpreter. "I never relaxed. With just nine contests left on the schedule and the club sitting four points adrift in the Western Conference playoff race, the Canucks have no margin for error. "Everybodys looking at the standings. We are too," head coach John Tortorella said after Tuesdays practice at Rogers Arena. "All we can do is control what we have. "Were going to keep on trying to battle away here and find points." That begins Wednesday in Minnesota against the Wild before another tough test the following night against the Colorado Avalanche. Both teams are all but locked into playoff positions, something the Canucks can only dream of at this point. While the standings dont look all that daunting at first glance — the eighth-place Phoenix Coyotes were four points up with a game in hand on Vancouver heading into Tuesday — the math tells a different story. The website www.sportsclubstats.com, which calculates teams playoff chances, currently gives the Canucks just a 2.3 per cent shot at making this years post-season. Its a stunning slide for a club that has become accustomed to battling for division titles in recent years, not its playoff life. Vancouver has won its last two games over the punchless Nashville Predators and the Buffalo Sabres to stay above water, but the Wild and Avalanche should pose a much tougher test in what could be two season-defining contests. "Weve been a very resilient group. Weve been on the outside looking in for a while now and weve climbed right back up there," said Canucks defenceman Kevin Bieksa. "Weve had some tough losses for sure. Theres no hiding that, but we keeping fighting. "Were still here. Were still standing." They might not be after this week. Apart from the Coyotes, the Dallas Stars also stand in the way of the Canucks playoff hopes. Dallas was three points up on Vancouver with two games in hand heading into Tuesday. But if Vancouver can survive the trip to Minnesota and Colorado, the club could have some life with six of its final seven games coming at home. "Im just trying to take it day by day here," said goaltender Eddie Lack, who is expected to make his 14th straight start Wednesday. "I know (Phoenix and Dallas) have a really tough schedule left. We have a lot of home games too so hopefully we can take advantage of that and just do our part here and well see if its enough or not.dddddddddddd." Canucks forward Zack Kassian said the players are aware of the out-of-town scoreboard each night, but added that the daunting task makes his preparation easier. "We know theres only nine and we know that every one of those games is going to be very important for our hockey team," he said. "You definitely look (at the scores) as a team when youre not playing and youre seeing how other teams are doing that youre trying to chase. "At the end of the day if we dont take care of our business and win hockey games it has no effect on us." Canucks forward Daniel Sedin said he cant help but pay attention to other teams results when every point is so critical. "I think you have to right now. We need those two teams to lose a few games," he said. "I think you keep an eye on that, but on game day youre so focused on your own games you dont really worry too much about the other scores." Tortorella and his players both refuse to use injuries as an excuse, but the Canucks have rarely had a chance to ice their full lineup since the end of December. Daniel Sedin returned on Sunday against Buffalo, but the club lost Henrik Sedin the same night, while fellow forward Alexandre Burrows was hurt against Nashville. Neither will make the two-game road trip. "It cant be deflating. Weve been going through this all year long. You get a couple back, another one goes out," said Tortorella. "Its been most of our top guys ... but it cant be deflating at this time of year. We just need to stay upbeat." While refusing to use injuries as a crutch to explain his teams predicament, the fiery coach who preaches pressure in all three zones added that the crowded sick bay has left him hamstrung at times. "The lineup when we were healthy, I think we were a different team. I think it allowed us to play a little bit differently, too," said Tortorella. "When we started getting banged up there ... we had to make some adjustments within our play and it changes things." Bieksa said that despite the injuries and long odds, a belief remains in the Canucks locker-room that the playoffs are still attainable. "Weve set ourselves up to make a push at least," he said. "Were fighting to the end. Were not going to give up." Follow @JClipperton_CP on Twitter ' ' '

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Jered Weaver bounded off the field shouting and pumping his fist after quashing a base-loaded jam with no outs in the top of the eighth inning. He was pretty excited in the bottom half, too, as he watched his teammates walk around the bases. The Angels scored three runs on five straight walks in the eighth after Weaver escaped a based-loaded jam with no outs in the top half, and they hung on to beat the New York Yankees 4-1 on Monday night. "I showed a little emotion there," Weaver said. "Obviously getting out of a jam. ... I got pretty hyped. Then it came down to a couple walks with the bases loaded. Great job by the guys for battling." Yankees relievers Shawn Kelley (0-2), Matt Thornton and Preston Claiborne walked six overall in the eighth, the most walks in an inning by New York since 1990. The wild display came after manager Joe Girardi was ejected by plate umpire Laz Diaz for arguing a strike call in the top of the inning and engaging Diaz in a heated argument. Weaver (3-2) allowed a run and six hits in eight innings, struck out seven and walked one. The right-hander bounded off the mound pumping his fist and shouting in excitement after getting Derek Jeter to ground into an inning-ending double play in the eighth. The Angels loaded the bases against Kelley with three walks, including a two-out intentional pass to Albert Pujols that preceded a base on balls to pinch-hitter Raul Ibanez. Collin Cowgill scored on a walk to Howie Kendrick and Kelley was replaced by Thornton. Kelley was tossed by Diaz on his way to the dugout. Thornton then walked Ian Stewart to force in another run, and Claiborne did likewise to Chris Iannetta. "I didnt attack the zone and do what I normally do, and it cost me," Kelley said. "Im not going to say anything about the strike zone. I made a lot of bad pitches, so its on me." The Yankees loaded the bases in the top of the eighth on singles by Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts and a bunt hit by Ichiro Suzuki. Girardi was tossed after questioning a 1-0 pitch to Brett Gardner from the dugout, then came on the field and continued his rant. "When you have a 1-0 count and the next pitchh is called 1-1, it changes the whole at-bat.dddddddddddd. It was the biggest pitch of the game to that point. I mentioned to Laz in a respectful way earlier in the game that I thought a pitch to Kelly Johnson and he gave me the Mutombo," Girardi said, wagging his finger. "And I dont appreciate that. Im not a little kid and I dont need to be scolded." Gardner then struck out and Jeter grounded into a 4-6-3 double play on Weavers next offering. Ernesto Frieri pitched a perfect ninth for his third save in five chances. Yankees right-hander David Phelps allowed a run and three hits over 5 1-3 innings with three strikeouts and a walk. It was his 24th career start and first since July 4, 2013. Phelps made his first nine appearances this season out of the bullpen, but was inserted into the rotation because of Michael Pinedas 10-game suspension for having a foreign substance on his neck during a game at Boston on April 23. Phelps matched zeroes with Weaver through four innings before Kendrick led off the Angels fifth with a drive into the right field corner that skipped away from Suzuki for a triple. Stewart delivered the run with a slow-hit grounder to third base, and Johnsons only play was to first. The only hit Weaver allowed during the first six innings was a leadoff single in the fourth by Jeter, ending an 0-for-14 drought for the Yankees captain. "Youve got to tip your cap to Weaver. He threw an incredible game," Phelps said. "You go against a teams ace, thats going to happen sometimes." Jeter doubled inside third base on Weavers first pitch in the seventh, advanced on Jacoby Ellsburys groundout and scored the tying run on a single by former Angel Mark Teixeira. Paris, France - There wont be a matchup of the Williams sisters at the French Open. Serena and Venus Williams could have met in the third round at Roland Garros, but, surprisingly, neither made it out of round two on Wednesday. After Venus was eliminated by Slovakias Anna Schmiedlova in three sets on Court Chatrier to start the second round, the top-seeded Serena was stunned by Spains Garbine Muguruza. Schmiedlova, in her second French Open and fifth Grand Slam event, pulled off a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the 29th-seeded Venus for her first-ever win against a top-30 opponent. The shocker then came about an hour later on Court Lenglen, as the 20-year- old Muguruza took full advantage of an uncharacteristically sloppy Serena in a 6-2, 6-2 triumph. Muguruzas best result in five previous Grand Slam events was a fourth-round loss to Agnieszka Radwanska at the Australian Open earlier this year. "Its a dream come true," said Muguruza. "Since I was a child, I thought, Oh, I want to play against Serena on center court, and today was the day, and I think I did very good." Serena struggled with her typically devastating serve. "I dont think anything worked for me," Serena said. "It was one of those days. You cant be on every day, and, gosh, I hate to be off during a Grand Slam. It happens." It wasnt Serenas earliest exit at Roland Garros. She was bounced in the first round two years ago by Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano, then rebounded by completely dominating her opponents last year en route to her second French title -- dropping just one set in seven matches. Serenas loss continued the run of surprising outcomes over the last three days in the French capital. Mens third seed Stan Wawrinka was sent home in the first round on Monday and Li Na, the womens second seed and 2011 champion, was knocked out Tuesday. A third-seeded Radwanska eased past Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-4, while Russian great Maria Sharapova also avoided an upset by stifling Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 7-5, 6-2. Pliskova was a clay court runner-up in Germany last week. The seventh-seeded former world No. 1 Sharapova is perhaps now the favorite to capture the 2014 French Open. She titled here two years ago to complete the career Grand Slam and lost to Serena in last years marquee finale in southwest Paris. Sharapova has lost only four clay court matches since 2012, with three of them coming at the hands of Serena. The other one came against fellow former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic in Rome two weeks ago. Eighth-seeded German Angelique Kerber also avoided an upset Wednesday by tackling American Varvara Lepchenko 6-2, 7-5, while ninth-seeded Aussie Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia raced past Austrian Tamira Paszek 6-3, 6-4. Making her Grand Slam debut this week, promising American teenager Taylor Townsend took out 20th-seeded French favorite Alize Cornet 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 on Day 4. The 18-year-old blew a 4-1 lead in the second set and was up big, at 5-1 in the third, before blowing four match points and letting Cornet pull within 4-5 in the stanza. But Townsend would hang on to advance amid some light rain. Townsends third-round opponent will be tough Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro. Meanwhile, Swedens Johanna Larsson rallied for a surprising 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory over 12th-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy, the 14th-seeded Suarez Navarro defeated Swiss Timea Bacsinszky 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 and German Mona Barthel upset injured 16th-seeded fellow countrywoman Sabine Lisicki 6-1, 3-0. The Wimbledon runner-up Lisicki was forced to retire with right wrist injury she suffered after taking a spill on court in the opening set against Barthel. In other action involving seeds, No. 18 Canadian Eugenie Bouchard came back from a set down to post a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over German Julia Goerges; No. 19 former U.S. Open champ Sam Stosur leveled Austrian Yvonne Meusburger 6-1, 6-3; No. 31 Slovakian veteran Daniela Hantuchova took care of Frances Claire Feuerstein 6-1, 6-4; and Croat Ajla Tomljanovic upended No. 32 Russian Elena Vesnina 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Bouchard captured her first-ever WTA title last week in Nuremberg, Germany. Stosur was a French Open runner-up back in 2010. The second round is scheduled to conclude Thursday, including matches for fourth-seeded Simona Halep, fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova, sixth-seeded former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic, 10th-seeded Sara Errani and 11th-seeded former top- ranked performer Ana Ivanovic. Halep will meet Brit Heather Watson, while the former French Open champion and runner-up Ivanovic will face Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and the 2012 Roland Garros finalist Errani will battle German Dinah Pfizenmaier. Nike Air Vapormax Billig . -- New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has no concerns about the health of shortstop Derek Jeter, who was limited to 17 games last season due to leg injuries. ORLANDO, Fla. -- Tiger Woods was a large part of the conversation on the eve of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. And hes not even playing. Woods is missing Bay Hill for only the second time in his career when the tournament starts Thursday on a course that Palmer said is in the best shape ever. Woods has won eight times, including the last two years, but he called the 84-year-old host on Tuesday to say persistent back pain will keep him from playing. "He didnt tell me how bad his back is. I dont think he knows how bad his back is," Palmer said. "I think hes listening to the doctors. And he mentioned that theyre saying that he needs to give it a bit of a rest and see if he can work it out. He was very nice. And I, of course, have great sympathy for the fact that he tried like hell to come here and play. And I appreciate that and the fact that he called. "I think he wanted to play golf this week," Palmer said. "I think that he needs to take (time) -- whether its this week, next week or the following week -- to get ready for Augusta. Certainly, if I were in that position, Id be doing much the same." Most of the chatter was more about the future with Woods. Will he play at the Masters? Stuck on 14 majors for the last five years, can he match or surpass the record 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus? And what will be the larger obstacle -- his age (38), his health (legs and back) or the competition (long list)? "I dont think 38 years is the ultimate stopping point for his quest to do what Jack did," Palmer said. "I think it lessens the possibility of that happening. Its going to be tough. Its going to be tough to keep the concentration and the type of the game that is necessary to win majors." Nicklaus won four of his majors after turning 38. Ben Hogan, with battered legs from a car accident, won five majors after turning 38. Palmer, however, believes more than age is at stake for Woods. "These young guys are tough, and theyre strong," Palmer said. "And if they continue to play as well as theyve been playing, its going to be tough for anybody -- whether it be Nicklaus or Tiger or whomever it would be -- to continue to win major championships. And were talking about guys that are playing good and coming on." Palmer actually had a list of players he was talking about. Some of thhem were young, such as Chris Kirk and Harris English.dddddddddddd Others had either won this season (Ryan Moore) or played well recently (Robert Garrigus). "I dont know how many you want me to name," Palmer said. "But really, the strength and the ability of these people is very pleasing to me." Graeme McDowell, a runner-up to Woods two years at Bay Hill, said he can understand what the No. 1 player is going through with injuries. He also believes that competition might be an even larger obstacle than his health for Woods to break Nicklaus record. "Hes a physical player who creates a lot of speed and a lot of power and his body is starting to struggle a little bit, no doubt about it," McDowell said. "But Im sure hell fix it. ... But we all talk about how good the fields are nowadays. Taking Tigers fitness and physicality out of it, winning major championships is getting harder and harder for everyone -- including the best player maybe thats ever lived in Tiger. "Hes got more than just his body to be fighting. Theres a lot of great players in the world now," McDowell said. "Its going to be harder for him to achieve Jacks record. But if anyone can do it, Im sure he can find a way because we all know how good he is." The field at Bay Hill is not as strong as usual, starting with the absence of Woods, the No. 1 player in the world and an eight-time winner of this event. Match Play champion Jason Day (No. 4 in the world) pulled out with recurring pain in his thumb, and Phil Mickelson (No. 5) is not playing this year. Not that it would change the dynamics of what already has been a peculiar season. With 18 tournaments in the books this season, Zach Johnson is the only player to win a PGA Tour event while ranked among the top 10 in the world. The Masters is three weeks away. Is it time for the stars to come out? "Hopefully, this one does," Masters champion Adam Scott said, pointing to himself with a laugh. "But as far as unexpected winners, it seems to me thats happening more and more in golf. There are more and more guys breaking through, putting in a lot of hard work and getting what they deserve. So I think weve seen a bit of a shift in the game over the last couple of years -- a lot less domination by top players." ' ' '
NASHVILLE -- Artem Anisimov just keeps scoring for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Anisimov had the only goal of the game with 6:25 remaining in the third period and Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves to lead the Blue Jackets to a 1-0 victory over the Nashville Predators on Saturday night. It was the sixth goal in the last six games for Anisimov, who also has scored the last four game-winners for Columbus. With the game still scoreless, James Wisniewski sent a pass from the left circle to Anisimov at the left faceoff dot. Anisimov carried the puck to the goal line before cutting toward the Nashville net and sliding a backhander by Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne just inside the far post. "He skated down the ice and he actually made the drop to me," Wisniewski said of Anisimov. "I love when the D-man just stays there because then the forward just skates right around them, make a quick pass, and hes all alone with the goalie. He made a great move and scored." The Predators have lost four in a row and seven of their last eight. They have scored just three goals in their last four games, and it was Bobrovskys third shutout of the season for Columbus, which has won four of five. "Weve been shooting enough pucks, were just not finding the back of the net," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "There are a lot of dry players." Making his third consecutive start after being sidelined since late October with an infection in his hip, Rinne made 35 saves. "I felt confident and I felt comfortable out there tonight," Rinne said. "Hopefully, myself too, I can improve all the time." Rinne faced just five shots in the first, but with 5:45 remaining in the opening frame, he denied Ryan Johansens wrist shot attempt from the right side off of a 2-on-1 break. Midway through the second, Rinne got his blocker on Boone Jenners shot from the right circle. Nashville dominated the shots on goal in the first period, outshooting the Blue Jackets 14-5. "I though guys did a great job in front of me," Bobrovsky said of his defencemen. "They shot from mostly outside, so they boxed them out. They were great." The tables turned in the middle frame when Columbus put 15 shots on Rinne, and the Predators managed just four on Bobrovsky. The Blue Jackets had the shot advantage in the third as well, 16-10. The Predators had a chance to tie late in the third, but Mike Fishers shot from the slot rang off the far post with less than 30 seconds remaining and then Bobrovsky got his glove on an attempt from Colin Wilson. "It is one of those games where you are wondering is anybody going to be able to beat either one of those guys," Columbus coach Todd Richards said. "Bob came up big at the end when the game was on the line." NOTES: Columbus made their only visit to Nashville for the 2013-14 season. Too bad for the Los Angeles Clippers. Marc Gasol had 30 points and 12 rebounds and the Grizzlies dominated the paint en route to a 107-91 victory over the Clippers for their 22nd straight home win. Los Angeles had been shooting 65 percent inside of five feet coming in -- among the top five in the NBA -- and outscored Miami and Orlando a combined 82-58 in the lane during the first two games of its road trip. It was a different story on Wednesday, as the Grizzlies held a commanding 52-32 advantage in the paint. Zach Randolph tallied 10 points and eight rebounds, while Courtney Lee netted 13 points for Memphis, which has won six of its last seven games. Just a good solid win, Memphis coach Dave Joerger said. It was very physical and I thought we kept our composure. Chris Paul posted 22 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Clippers, who had won three of their last four games heading in. The Grizzlies seem to have that edge, Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. Paul netted the final four pointts during a 6-0 flurry that pulled the Clippers within 78-70 late in the third quarter, but Memphis responded with an elongated 25-8 run that bled into the fourth to put the game away.dddddddddddd The Grizzlies concluded the third by scoring 10 of the last 12 points. Beno Udrih and Lee knocked down 3-pointers after the Clips cut the gap to eight and Quincy Pondexters driving floater in the paint with 1.5 seconds remaining in the period staked Memphis to an 88-72 cushion heading into the final frame. Udrih had nine points during the surge, which was capped by consecutive triples from Lee and Jon Leuer for a healthy 103-78 cushion with 8:17 remaining. Memphis cruised to the easy win the rest of the way. The Grizzlies led 26-21 following a quarter of play and a 16-5 second-quarter swing helped them jump out to a 49-32 spread before they took a 53-40 advantage into the break. Several key players, including captain Philipp Lahm and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, are carrying injuries into the camp in St. Leonhard, in the German speaking Alto Adige region. Lahm and Neuer will join the rest of the team later. Defender Per Mertesacker delayed his arrival by a day because of the birth of his second child. Another star, Sami Khedira of Real Madrid, will not join the squad until after the Champions League final on Saturday. Germany coach Joachim Loews camp will eventually include 27 players. The squad will return to Germany for a friendly against Cameroon on June 1, after which Loew will announce his final 23-man squad. Germany also plays Armenia on June 6, one day before departing for Brazil. The Germans open their World Cup campaign against Portugal on June 16 in Salvador, then play Ghana on June 21 in Fortaleza and conclude the group stage against the United States on June 26 in Recife. Loew said earlier this week that he was optimistic about Lahm and Neuer recovering for the World Cup. "But its good and important to have them with us in South Tirol from the start, even if they cant practice," Loew said. His players, however, decided to extend their break. While the remaining squad flew to Italy, Bayern Munichs players arrived by car -- minus Lahm and Neuer. While Lahm was expected to show up on Friday, Neuer was "day-by-day," but still expected to arrive at some point, team spokkesman Jens Grittner said.dddddddddddd The decision for them to stay in Munich was reached mutually by Loew and team doctors, Grittner said. Lahm, nominally a defender, can also play in midfield, a role he has executed well at Bayern Munich. He injured his left ankle in the German Cup final on Saturday, when Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0. Doctors said he would not be able to train for up to seven days and Lahm said Wednesday he would stay home until Friday, while stressing that he would be ready for the World Cup. "I need to rest a few days but I will be top fit by the World Cup," Lahm told Bild newspaper in comments also published on the federations site. Lahm said Germany needed to work on its defence. "Weve allowed too many goals and too many chances recently. We have to pay more attention to our defence," he said. Neuer injured his right shoulder in the cup final and is wearing a brace. Khedira has yet to play a full match since coming back this month from a knee injury that had sidelined him for six months. A leader of the team, he is considered one of Loews key men. Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been nursing a knee inflammation and missed the cup final. Miroslav Klose, one of only two strikers in squad, has been bothered by a hamstring injury. Defender Mats Hummels has a foot injury and played the cup final on medication. He played only 23 Bundesliga games this season for Dortmund because of various injuries. Germany also trained in the same region ahead of the 1990 World Cup in Italy and went on to win the last of its three titles. ' ' '
VANCOUVER -- The B.C. Lions believe they are a better football team than their 6-4 record indicates. The Lions realize a win against the Montreal Alouettes Sunday at BC Place Stadium would help give some credence to that belief. But the players also know the road to proving themselves isnt going to get any easier as the CFL season progresses. "We can talk until were blue in the face but at the end of the day we know that numbers are the only thing that dont lie," defensive end Keron Williams said Saturday after B.C. held a light practice. "We cant keep going up and down the slope. We have to stay on an even keel ... to get on top of that mountain. Its not going to happen with us wavering and teetering." The Lions, who were beaten 37-29 by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last weekend, have lost two of their last three games. In their last meeting against Montreal on Aug. 22, the Lions blew a 27-1 half-time lead and lost 39-38. Nickleback Korey Banks said the Lions have been their own worst enemy. "Everything that possibly could go wrong went wrong," said Banks, who was involved in a fight with teammate Khreem Smith during practise this week. "Our quarterback is getting hit. Were messing up on every phase of the game at certain parts of the game. We havent played a full game yet." Coach Mike Benevides said his team must "find a level of consistency." "Now that we are in the second half of the season, we really need to assert ourselves as to who we are and what we want to be," said Benevides. Football players like to say their next game is the most important of the season. This week its more than a cliche for the Lions. Only two of B.C.s wins this year have come against teams with winning records. The Lions are third in the West behind the Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders. Heading down the stretch the Lions play Saskatchewan three times and Calgary twice. "This is the biggest game of the season," said veteran halfback Ryan Phillips. "Im not saying that because its the next one. Im saying that because of the scenario that we are in. "We are behind two teams. These next games are important before we go into that stretch run against those two teams. Its very important for us to take care of the next few games. That way we are on the right track and go into that stretch with confidence. One player anxious to make a contribution is tailback Andrew Harris. After rushing for 1,112 yards last year, Harris has seen his production drop recently. He had just five carries for 10 yards in the loss against Hamilton. In his last four games Harris has carried the ball 35 times for 123 yards and no touchdowns. "The last four games have been the worst of my career as far as numbers," said Harris, who has rushed for 582 yards on 118 carries this season. "Its frustrating. "You want to bounce back and make an impact. Thats something I havent done the last couple of games." One reason Harris isnt seeing the ball as much is hes been asked to block for quarterback Travis Lulay. Defences have been exposing weaknesses in the B.C. offensive scheme, resulting in the Lions giving up 26 sacks this year compared to 30 all last season. "We have stuff in place to counteract that stuff," said Lulay. "Its going to be a matter of recognition and execution early in the game. "Its a group effort in beating that stuff." Montreal (4-7) is coming off a tough 37-30 loss to Toronto last week but still can climb into a second-place tie with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats with a win over the Lions. "I expect a very tough ball game," said Jim Popp, Montreals coach and general manager. "Both teams are better than their records and both teams are still trying to find themselves." With quarterback Anthony Calvillo still sidelined with a concussion, Tanner Marsh will make his third CFL start. Marsh had a Cinderella performance when he threw for 329 yards after coming on in relief in the comeback win over B.C. Against Toronto last week, the clock struck midnight when he was intercepted three times. "They (Toronto) took us out of things that worked the last time, like the run game," said Popp. "We still made some big plays, just not consistently. Were still working on that. Theres still too many turnovers." Marsh took the Lions by surprise the first time the teams met. Phillips said that element of surprised is gone. "When you have film on people you get a better indication of what makes them successful and it gives us opportunities to make big plays on defence," said Phillips, who is tied with Banks for the lead among active CFL players with 37 interceptions. "You can play toward some peoples tendencies and things like that. You get a better read now that they are trying to do things and things they are comfortable doing." Montreal has chosen a tough place to try to avoid going 4-7 for the first time since they re-entered the league in 1996. The Als are 11-1 in their last 12 visits to Vancouver. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Anaheim officials have extended the stay of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the city by at least three years and hope to use the time to strike new deals to keep the team in place even longer. The City Council voted Tuesday 4-1 to delay the Angels option to leave the city from 2016 to 2019, allowing time for negotiations that city officials hope could keep the team in the Orange County city until 2057. The team hasnt threatened a move, but owner Arte Moreno has discussed building a stadium elsewhere in Southern California. The vote also opens the door to talks with the Angels over dropping Anaheim from the teams name. The addition of Los Angeles to the name was the source of a heated court battle. A pair of 3-pointers from Fisher-Davis got the Commodores within three at 24-21 with seven minutes to play in the first half, but the Razorbacks answered with a pair of buckets and eventually took a 36-28 lead into the break. Arkansas built a 10-point lead 6 1/2 minutes into the second half after Anthony Bell put in a 3-ball for a 49-39 lead, but Vanderbilt answered with a 13-4 run to get the game within one. TORONTO - Unable to do his talking on the pitch, a frustrated Jermain Defoe did some venting Thursday. The Toronto FC star said he may have to undergo an operation because of the persistent groin injury that has kept him out of 10 of the last 14 games. And the 32-year-old England striker says he is upset that some have questioned both his commitment to the club and whether he is really injured. There are a few fans that have said certain things and Im like well thats a bit harsh, but obviously I would never retaliate, he told reporters. But at the same time, I think if you do want someone to stay at a football club, at least support them. At least show them that you want them to be here.Defoe, sounding more hurt than angry during his 11-minute conversation with reporters, repeated he has never come out and said publicly that he wants to leave a club. But he has stopped short of saying he will be back in Toronto next season. At the end of the day, I dont know what the future holds, he said. But what I would say is that I was desperate to get into the playoffs. Its something I would love to experience.Toronto (11-14-8) was eliminated from playoff contention last weekend and will watch the post-season from the sidelines for the eight straight year. Defoe leads Toronto with 11 goals in 19 games but has not scored since July 16. He has played just 387 minutes, over five six games, since then.Head coach Greg Vanney said he has not heard that Defoe is unhappy or wants to move on.But he said his star striker, after a season to experience the unique nature of MLSs travel and schedule, now has to make up his mind.Because theres a lot on the line, the club has done a lot for him, and he needs to be all-in, Vanney said. If hes not all-in, then we have to come up with a solution and we need to find another solution for the club.Defoes future has been up in the air since Toronto turned down a club-record transfer bid at the end of the summer window. The new transfer window opens in January.Defoe said such speculation is normal in Europe during the transfer window, when clubs regularly go after players.I can understand fans would be frustrated. Because as a fan I think Id be a little bit frustrated, not with the player but with the situation where potentially, maybe a player could be leaving, a player thats not been here that long. So yeah I can understand that but at the same time I think what people need to realize is I never once came out publicly and said I want to leave the club.Theres players that come out and say Yeah, I want to leave, that hand in transfer requests. But I just get on with the football. I just let my football do the talking, then whatever happens happens.Defoe did not help himself after the transfer window closed Sept. 1, limiting himself to a pair of tweets from England, where his injury was being treated, before meeting the media in Toronto on Sept. 24.Vanney agreed that the information void did not help cap speculation. He could definitely have helped himself if he had would have jumped out publicly immediately saying Hang on a second, I want to be here. Theres nothing to this other than I need to get right. I clearly think that would have helped himself for sure. The transfer window, coupled with Defoes injury and rumours from England led to a perfect storm of events that is easy for people to draw a conclusion that hes not engaged or not wanting to be here, said Vanney. I can say just personally, from his mouth to ours, Ive never heard that he doesnt want to be here.Asked if he had been unfairly characterized this year, Defoe replied 100 per cent.Throughout my career, Ive never been criticized with my commitment because I love football, he said. I always say Im part of the old school, where I came from and how my parents brought me up. Not just my mom, my grandparents and everyone. And then you read things. Obviously social media is powerful and I see things from the fans. I try not to read it. But Im only human and obviously I want to read things. And you want people to like you. You want the fans to realize that you love playing for the club and you love football. But I suppose people over here dont really know me as well as the people back home. Its just sometimes I read it and I say to myself Are they talking about me? They must be getting the wrong person. Its part and parcel, I suppose, of playing football. I take it on the chin, Im professional. As long as I know in my heart that Im committed, then I suppose the rest doesnt really bother me.Vanney will presumably hear Defoes intentions for 2015 at end-of-season player meetings.Candidly Im not really sure what to expect, he said when asked whether he expects Defoe to be in training camp. I know he plays the game, he wants to be successful, I know he wants to score goals. What Im not sure is now that hes spent a year in the league, what are his true feeling about this league and the decision that hes made and does want to really see this out? And is this really where he wants to really push his career. These are all conversations that were going to have once this season closes. I have not had those conversations with him.I think its a dialogue. And I think by and large we want people who want to be here for more than one year, for more than two years, that can really help us pull this group together and win. That takes a big commitment. We would like to have him back if Jermain is ready to play and is healthy and his minds in the right place and he believes in the project, which is for us to be successful.Vanney knows that the club is much better with a healthy Defoe. Toronto went 6-0-2 this year when Defoe scored. He is a fantastic player when all things are right for him, so if we can get that guy back, Ill take him, he said.Defoe will miss out on Saturdays season finale in New England because of his groin injury and plans to see a specialist in Germany. A sports hernia operation may be in the cards. Its something that I need fixing, because its stopping me from what I really want to do in games, he said. The main thing for me is shooting. At the minute, Im shooting with pain.Defoe said it came to a head two games ago against the New York Red Bulls, the last time he played.I really struggled, he said. In the second half, it wasnt really Jermain Defoe. I couldnt really turn sharp, I couldnt really hit any shots. I was just trying to adapt my game, basically just to be on the pitch, just trying to help the team. But in a way, not helping myself because I couldnt perform how I normally do.Follow @NeilMDavidson on Twitter Cheap Nike MLB Jerseys .Under the agreement announced Monday, the Cuban defector is guaranteed $68.5 million over six seasons.Tomas gets a $14 million signing bonus that is payable within 30 days of the deals approval by Major League Baseball, and then salaries of $2 million next year, $4 million in 2016, $6 million in 2017 and $10 million in 2018. The City of Winnipeg has a stomach flu going around and I caught it. That made training a little difficult. I lost a lot of ground but gained a new understanding of just what it means when athletes get the flu, even a week before a big game or fight. I have been useless. Cardio was cut in half and I instantly dripped sweat. My technical skills hitting the heavy bag had no rhythm, and looked horrible. Im not looking to get into an MMA match, and I cant imagine what it must be like to go into one with a flu, having been part of the last one or two weeks of a fight camp. Its an official excuse in my books. However, training must go on, also, work and all things media related. This is the beauty of my career. Like most up and coming MMA fighters, I have a full time job to fit training around. I also do a lot of media work to promote my One Fit City movement. There are no days off trying to get the Nation of Canada healthier, One Fit City at a time. Fighters have to train, work, and promote themselves. There is no one who will make them stars; they need to do it themselves. It all takes time and energy. This week, after returning to something that resembled training Thursday, the plan is going to involve a lot of plyometrics and heavy lifts. This is where you, the fan at home can try adding to your workout. There is a lot of disconnect with fighters, fans, and strength coaches. Most fighters have media at their workouts for the last 10 days. Thats when the conditioning and power circuits are in place. Strength coaches usually are not well spoken or very interesting people so they dont get to come on and explain the science or the building of a program. So fans think fighters do nothing but circuits. Early on, if an athlete needs to tune up their power, we use big power movements. Elite Performance is one of those gyms where you can drop weights, Olympic lift, and bend bars with weights. In fact, Jeff Fisher demands it. So for me, old, frail, retired, radio show, blogging, me, its going to be rough getting back to this next week for real. If you are a fan looking to try some of this stuff, you may want to consider one of two things. First, invest and go see and use a gym that trains pro athletes. Across the Nation there are some amazing gyms that have popped up. You can get the assistance from a professional strength coach and train in a facility that has real pro athletes getting better. Second, visit the local University. Same concept as a private facility, less cost, but there are usually a lot less options for when you can train. So this week, add into your training regime two days, preferably Monday and Thursday, that have big strength and plyo lifts. Im going to be doing something like this - 3 Warm up front squats x 8-10 - 5 sets of back squat x 6 super set with 4 max medicine ball jumps - 5 sets of dead lift x 6 super set with 6 single leg skate jumps Then I have a super-secret set of plyos and various balance/isolating leg exercises. They are just exercises I pick that day based on how Im feeling and whats needing more work, lateral jumping or vertical. Have fun, add some heavy strength creating work to your plan. Make some changes that you will notice in your lifting. Then, think about trying some conditioning classes. Give kickboxing a try. VALENCIA, Spain -- Spain overcame a few nervous moments to ease past Macedonia 5-1 with five different goal scorers in its first qualifier for the 2016 European Championship on Monday. Although the defending European champions began well with early goals by Sergio Ramos and Paco Alcacer, Macedonia countered with a 28th-minute goal by Agim Ibraimi that unsettled Spain. However, an assured performance by captain Iker Casillas in goal helped Spain recover its self-confident, rapid-passing game. Sergio Busquets, David Silva and Pedro Rodriguez added goals as Spain turned the game into a rout. Ramos opened the scoring by converting a penalty in the 16th with a deft lob into the middle of the net after Silva was tumbled down by defender Stefan Ristovski. A minute later, Alcacer found himself alone in front of goal after Juan Francisco "Juanfran" Torres drew Macedonias defenders to the right before making a precise pass that the Spain forward converted to get a goal on his debut. But Juanfran then tripped Ibrahimi in the penalty area and the Macedonian converted in the 28th. Four minutes later Rodriguez had his accurate shot deflected by Pacovski. Midfielder Busquets then scored his first internatiional goal -- in his 69th appearance -- in first half injury time with a low, powerful shot to goalkeeper Tomislav Pacovskis left.dddddddddddd Casillas prevented another comeback attempt when he acrobatically got a foot to Adis Jahovics powerful shot in the 47th minute. Silva exchanged passes with defender Jordi Alba for his 20th international goal in the 50th, and Rodriguez added the fifth with a delicate lob over Pacovski in injury time. Francisco "Isco" Alarcon came on for Alcacer, before Del Bosque gave 19-year-old Munir El Haddadi his first cap by substituting Jorge "Koke" Resurreccion with the Barcelona youngster. Del Bosque had included El Haddadi in the squad as a late replacement for the injured Diego Costa in a bid to breathe new life into Spain after its botched World Cup defence in Brazil. Also in Spains Group C, Slovakia won 1-0 at Ukraine, and Luxembourg held Belarus to a 1-1 draw. The hosts had gone ahead in the 42nd when Lars Gerson volleyed into the roof of the net. ' ' '
PINEHURST, N.C. -- Even in the best of times, Phil Mickelson has ample reason to expect the worst at the U.S. Open. More than two decades of play in the major known as the toughest test in golf has produced everything from agony to aggravation, mostly torment, never triumph. And all Mickelson has to show from the U.S. Open are silver medals -- a record six of them -- for finishing second. "He could have won six, and he hasnt won one," Ernie Els said. "I believe hes going to win one. Hes still young enough. His game is still good enough." The U.S. Open took on even greater importance to the 43-year-old Mickelson last summer when he won the British Open at Muirfield, leaving him one major away -- the U.S. Open, of course -- from joining five other greats who have the career Grand Slam. For all his heartache in golfs toughest test, his optimism hasnt wavered. Never mind that he has been linked to an insider trading investigation involving activist investor Carl Icahn and Las Vegas gambler Billy Walters, in which FBI agents paid him a visit after his first round at the Memorial. Or that Mickelson hasnt won this year, his worst start to a season since 2003. Mickelson not only believes hes going to win the U.S. Open, he thinks hes going to win more than one. "Some people view it as though, Hes come close and hes never done it. I see it as though Ive finished second six times in this event," Mickelson said. "I played some of my best golf in this event, and I should have an opportunity -- and more than one opportunity -- to close one out here in the future." The U.S. Open returning to Pinehurst No. 2 only adds to the intrigue. Thats where Mickelson picked up his first silver medal in 1999. He had a one-shot lead with three holes to play and had a 6-foot par putt on the 16th hole, while Payne Stewart was 25 feet away from par. Stewart made his putt, Mickelson missed and they were tied. Stewart took the lead with a short birdie on the 17th, then famously won the U.S. Open with a 15-foot par putt on the final hole. No worries. Mickelson surely would get another chance, and he did. He just doesnt have the trophy. Five years later, he was tied for the lead on the 17th hole at Shinnecock Hills when he hit into a bunker, blasted out to 5 feet and three-putted for double bogey. "It was like being in a morgue walking up the 18th," said Fred Funk, who was paired with him that day. The most crushing blow was at Winged Foot in 2006. Mickelson had a one-shot lead on the 18th hole. His tee shot clanged off a corporate tent. The bigger mistake was going for the green with a 3-iron and hitting a tree. His third shot plugged in the bunker. His fourth shot raced across the green. He made double bogey and lost my one. There was Mickelson, crouched on the green, hands cupped over his head. "I am such an idiot," he said. "Phil handled the whole thing like a true gentleman," said Kenneth Ferrie, who played with him in the final pairing. "He had nice words to say to me coming off 18 and was amazingly courteous and polite to the volunteers and officials considering what had just happened." And yet he keeps coming back for more. Sam Snead, who holds the PGA Tour record with 82 career wins, never won a U.S. Open. Lee Trevino never won the Masters. Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson never won the PGA Championship. Even so, none of those greats ever had as many chances to win the missing major as Mickelson. Hunter Mahan paid him the ultimate respect at Bethpage Black in 2009. Mickelson was tied for the lead with four holes to play until missing short par putts on the 15th and 17th holes. Another U.S. Open bid over, Mickelson was walking up to the 18th green when Mahan -- who had just as good of a chance to win that day -- began applauding, and thousands joined him. Mahan has played with Mickelson twice on Sunday when Lefty was the runner-up. The other occasion was last year at Merion. Mickelson twice made bogey with a wedge in his hand on the back nine. His last hope was to chip in from 40 yards to force a playoff with Justin Rose. He missed. "I looked at him and said, Good try, Phil. You can only do what you can do," Mahan said. "At some point, youve got to get a bounce or two and make a putt. I think he wants to win that tournament more than anything." The thought of Mickelson at Pinehurst stirs emotions. Stewart died in a freak plane crash four months after he won that U.S. Open. Mickelson carried a pager in his golf bag that week and pledged to withdraw if his wife went into labour. His first child, Amanda, was born the next day. Fifteen years later, the pressure is only greater. "Maybe it is his strength of mind, or his short game, that has enabled him to put himself in contention as so many times," Ferrie said. "As each year has gone on and he has won other majors, the focus has become more and more about the U.S. Open. As a player, when you want something so much, its even more difficult to achieve. Yet he keeps giving himself a chance." Cheap Air Max 95 Wholesale .com) - The Vancouver Canucks recovered from a fluke goal early last time out to knock off one of the top teams in the league. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- LeBron James called comments on an audio recording of a man identified as Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling "appalling" and said hes not sure if he would suit up for the remainder of the NBA playoffs if he played for the Clippers. "Theres no room for Donald Sterling in the NBA -- there is no room for him," the Heat forward said Saturday night before a playoff game against the Charlotte Bobcats. The league said Saturday it was investigating the recording posted on TMZs website, calling the comments "disturbing and offensive." James said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver should take swift action if the comments are found to be made by Sterling. "Obviously, if the reports are true its unacceptable in our league," James said. "It doesnt matter, white, black or Hispanic -- all across the races its unacceptable. As the commissioner of our league they have to make a stand. They have to be very aggressive with it. I dont know what it will be, but we cant have that in our league. "Were the model citizen of all sports around the world because we are the most recognizable figures. ... Its vvery disrespectful and its appalling.dddddddddddd" One of James best friends, Chris Paul, plays for the Clippers. James said he hasnt spoken with Paul, but "I can only imagine what is going through his head." "I have kind of wavered back and forth if I would actually sit out," James said. "If our owner would come out and say the things he said I would have to sit down with my teammates and talk to my family because at the end of the day, our family and teammates are way more important than that,. Basketball is huge and the playoffs have been unbelievable so far and I hate that something has to come out." In the recording, the man on the recorder questions his girlfriends association with minorities. James said hes not angry about the comments, just disappointed. "I can only imagine if a player came out and said something of that stature what would happen to us as players," James said. "I believe in Adam (Silver) and I believe in the NBA and they have to do something very fast before this really gets out of hand. But like I said there is no room for Donald Sterling in our league." HAMILTON - Drew MacIntyre made 32 saves for his first shutout of the season and the Toronto Marlies defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 2-0 in the American Hockey League on Friday. Greg McKegg and Jerry DAmigo had goals for the Marlies (24-12-4), who have won six of their past eight games. Dustin Tokarski stopped 20 shots for the Bulldogs (19-17-4). Fridays game got off to a frantic start, with Hamiltons Christian Thomas enjoying two quality scoring chances before Torontos Brad Staubitz drove wide on Jarrod Tinordi and slipped a shot just wide of Tokarskis far post. The clearest opportunity fell to Sven Andrighetto five minutes into the first period, as he split the Toronto defence and broke in alone on MacIntyre. The winger moved to his backhand and was stopped by a sliding MacIntyre, but drew a penalty in the process. The goaltenders judgement served him well with four minutes to play in the period, as he rushed out of his crease to snuff out a developing break. Joonas Nattinen emerged from the penalty box and collected a loose puck behind Torontos defenders, but MacIntyre successfully challenged him just inside his blue-line. The Bulldogs were left to rue their missed opportunities when McKegg opened the scoring for Toronto on the power play at 18:20 of the period. McKegg took an initial shot from the blue-line and followed the ensuing scrum into the slot with Martin St. Pierre serving a tripping penalty. Wade MacLeod eventually found him with a cross-ice pass that he quickly deposited past Tokarski. The fast-paced first period gave way to a more defensive second, as the Marlies comfortably protected their lead. Toronto scored a short-handed insurance goal as DAmigo spearheaded a solo rush at 15:45 of the period. The Marlies winger was tripped as he broke through the slot, but kept enough control to slide the puck past Tokarski, who was diving to his far post. Hamilton outshot Toronto 24-18 through forty minutes, but rarely tested MacIntyre in the subdued second period. The Bulldogs nearly broke MacIntyres shutout bid eight minutes into the third period, as Mike Blunden and Gabriel Dumont whacked at a loose puck in the low slot. But the goaltender reacted well to deny the attempts through a screen and smother the puck. Hamilton was 0-for-7 on the power play, while Toronto converted on one of five power-play opportunities. The NBA franchise announced Tuesday at a press conference it has officially changed its name back to the Hornets after 10 years of being known as the Bobcats. The change comes nearly one year after owner Michael Jordan indicated he wanted to change the name back to the Hornets. The league approved the change last July. Jordan didnt attend the press conference, but issued a statement saying its a "historic day for our franchise, our city and our fans." The Hornets resided in Charlotte from 1988-2002 before George Shinn moved the team -- and name -- to New Orleans after a messy divorce from the city. The name became available again when New Orleans owner Tom Benson changed his teams name from the Hornets to the Pelicans. Several hundred fans showed up at the downtown arena for the formal announcement. Hornets president and CEO Fred Whitfield said the goal is restore the energy the Hornets brought to the city when they were in Charlotte 12 years ago playing at the Charlotte Coliseum, which was known by fans simply as "The Hive." It was there the Hornets were consistently among the league leaders in attendance. "For me this day is almost surreal because I was a Hornets season ticket holder," Whitfield said. "I know what it felt like in the old Hive and the energy and excitement that happened to be there. Michael talks fondly about the days he came in and played against the Hornets and what a challenge it was not only to battle a good team, but also the fans." Whitfield also announced that in collaboration with the NBA and the Pelicans, all of the statistical information, records and history of the Charlotte NBA basketball will be resttored to the franchise.dddddddddddd. That means the Hornets will now own and have access to all of the historical elements from the recent Bobcats era (2004-14) as well as the original Hornets teams that played in Charlotte -- including stats from stars such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Muggsy Bogues. All of the Hornets records from their years in New Orleans will revert to the Pelicans history, Whitfield said. "That was a piece that was really important to us because we knew how important that was to our fans," Whitfield said. "Being able to have the old Hornets alumni back and be a part of family was important. We can say to them, Hey, you are welcome back and you are a part of the family." Whitfield estimates the name change will cost Jordan more than $4 million before all is said and done. The team is still working through the tedious process of rebranding the arena. But Hornets logos have begun to spring up inside and outside of the arena. "Its been well worth it," Whitfield said. "And it couldnt have happened without the financial commitment of our owner." The Hornets unveiled their new logos in December. Theyll unveil their new uniforms on June 19 and the playing floor design on June 26. The Hornets name will return to NBA action at the 2014 Summer League in Las Vegas. The popular Hugo the Hornet mascot will make his official return on June 5. Pete Guelli, the teams executive vice-president and chief sales and marketing officer, said fans have embraced the name change. It was my fifth straight year attending and, as always, there are many interesting matters discussed as it pertains to the use of statistics in sports. On this weeks Three Man Weave, Will Strickland and Duane Watson of TSN 1050s 1 On 1 With Will & Duane draft, NBA TV Canadas Mr. Everything and host of The Hangout, Akil Augustine (@akilaugustine). As the NBA playoffs go on and teams look to survive and advance, they evaluate the remaining series and summer tasks for the Toronto Raptors. Kyle Lowry is Masai Ujiris first order of business this summer, but who should his second be? Greivis Vasquez or Patrick Patterson? Strickland: No Brainer: Greivis Josue Vasquez Rodriguez. Quality back-ups at point guard are Loch Ness Monster-rare in The Association right now. When you have a guy like Kyle Lowry playing human bowling ball to help his team get wins, injuries are pre-destined. Vasquez stepped in admirably for Lowry in those times, as well as aiding to create a potent two point-guard backcourt with sure ballhandling, keen decision-making and absolutely zero fear of The Moment - all necessary variables to a winning equation. Project Pat Patterson, a handle hung on him by my #1On1 partner, Duane Watson, will be a priority to retain as well for Ujiri and the MLSE braintrust. I doubt he walks unless the offer to dance between the lines elsewhere with similar playing time is too great to pass.Augustine: Small forward! Not that I know what Masai should do... (#InMasaiWeTrust) but I would love to see an upgrade on the wing that would by some time for T-ROSS to blossom. Luol Deng anyone? Vince? Watson: It has to be The General Greivis Vasquez, a back-up guard who can play both positions and play alongside Kyle Lowry. Vasquez runs the pick-and-roll to perfection, but he also isnt scared to take the big shot. He got into a rhythm during the playoffs and was the most reliable player off the bench. His fire and passion are just the type of elements this team needs. Why does the Brooklyn Nets 4-0 regular season record against the Miami Heat mean nothing in the post-season?Strickland: The regular season is just that: regular. The second season, aka the playoffs, is where your legend is born. The Brooklyn Nets legend in the playoffs is rooted in being at full strength and still losing last year to the Nate Robinson-led, grossly undermanned, but infinitely tougher Chicago Bulls. Oh, lets not forget what should not have happened this season with the Nets edging the young Toronto Raptors. The two-time defending world champion Heat are built for the playoffs and are showing their pedigree in winning fashion with a commanding 2-0 lead over Brooklyn in the Eastern Conference semis. If the Nets lose Game 3 at home, itd be a safe better for them to procure the #TackleBox post haste. Augustine: Because the Heat have two modes: Regular season and playoffs. The Nets also have two modes...wait, no they dont. They are the No Mode Squad starring Busta-Ankle, aka D-Wont! Watson: This is why they call it the playoffs. As they have the past two springs, the Heat take their game into another gear in the playoffs. In two of the four losses against the Nets, Dwyane Wade was resting - for this very time of the year. For all of the Nets veteran experience, they are tired and bruised after a series in Toronto that they barely escaped from and Miami will have an answer for Joe Johnson. If the Oklahoma City Thunder lose to the Los Angeles Clippers, whos to blame - Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook or Scott Brooks?Strickland: The Thunder were one Zach Randolph "punch" to the face of noted agitator from The Bill Laimbeer School Of Smart Skullduggery, Steven Adams, away from a potential first-round exit. Tied at 1-1 with the Clippeers and headed to LA, the blame will have multiple directions for various reasons.dddddddddddd Scott Brookss loyalty to line-ups over deft and necessary adjustments, as well as other questionable coaching moves will catch major darts. Russell Westbrooks greatest strengths of supreme athleticism, overt passion and singular focus may also be his biggest weaknesses, especially in the eyes of his detractors. And last but not least, the 2013-2014 NBA scoring champ and MVP who has been famously quoted as being sick and tired of coming in second would face LeBron James-level scrutiny of his true value with a second round loss to the Clippers. Augustine: Scott Brooks. And the GM. Kendrick Perkins is stealing cash, Serge Ibaka is stuck in neutral and the rest of the bench isnt old enough to get into a club, excluding team chaperone Derek Fisher, let alone win a series. Watson: Sam Presti. As the GM of the Thunder he has nickled and dimed with this team to avoid the luxury tax, but he hasnt found the right supporting cast to work with his two stars. Since James Harden left, it has been on a downward slide and the MVP campaign of Durant hides some of the teams deficiencies. Is Roy Hibbert the key to the Pacers success? Strickland: No. Paul George is the key to the Pacers success, which could be fleeting in the face of the most dangerous team no one knows in the Washington Wizards. With rumours abounding over Hibberts inexplicable metamorphosis from All-Star to Hasheem Thabeet in the playoffs, Big Roy is a necessary piece for the Pacers just to get by the Wiz, nevermind talking Eastern Conference final rematch with the Heat. Augustine: Yes. Is this a trick question? Pull up footage of last year and superimpose it on top of footage from this year. Then, you will have your answer! Watson: He definitely makes a big difference to the Pacers chances on both sides of the ball. His post presence helps the defence and, if hes an option offensively, it allows Indiana to work an inside-out game. Hibbert awakening from his slumber is the easiest fix to a team that has been slumping for the better part of the year. What must the Portland Trail Blazers do to stop the San Antonio Spurs? Strickland: Quit? Hope Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Gregg Popovich all of a sudden turn into Dwight Howard, James Harden and Kevin McHale (OUCH!)? How about play stout defence, show the half-court execution they exhibited in the first 40 games of the regular season and understand in a hurry the difference between playoff basketball and championship-level basketball in the playoffs, if they have not already been brutally and ruthlessly made aware by arguable the best team in basketball right now? Coach Stotts and rising stars LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard have to be better in Game 3 at home in the Moda Center or there will be some fine playoff parting gifts, courtesy of the San Antonio Spurs. Augustine: Wait 365 days until next year. Or change the rules to the CBA and sign a bench during the post-season. Or hedge harder on those DAMN screens! All three options come with little chance for success! Watson: Hope that Bill Walton, Clyde Drexler and Terry Porter walk through that door! The Blazers need all the help they can get and its interesting to see such an outmatched team in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs. Damian Lillard and LaMarcus Aldridge have played at an all-world level for the Blazers, but their lack of depth on the bench is an Achilles heel, as the Spurs reserves have already proved they can compete with the Blazers starters. DAVOS, Switzerland -- Glen Metropolit hasnt played an NHL game since 2010, but on Thursday, the oldest player on Canadas Spengler Cup roster showed why hes the captain of the Canadian squad. After nearly scoring on his first shift of the game, the 39-year-old Metropolit -- whos played for Lugano in the Swiss league the past two seasons -- picked up a goal in the first period and assisted on Derek Walsers game winner in the third as Canada opened up the Spengler Cup with a 5-4 victory over the HC Vitkovice Steel of the Czech Republic. "Even at his age, on the blue-line and in the offensive zone, hes still one of the best players in the game in Switzerland so thats where hes going to be really good for us," head coach Doug Shedden said. "Hes played for me before and thats why I made him captain. This could be his last Spengler Cup and his children are here visiting from Florida. "Its just something that gets him excited about playing." Byron Ritchie, Micki DuPont, and Alexandre Bolduc also scored for Canada in a back-and-forth offensive game that saw leads slip away between both teams four times. Rudolf Huna, Peter Huzeka, Roman Szturic and Lukas Kucsera scored for Vitkovice. Vitkovices Filip Sindelar was the busier of the two goaltenders, stopping 37 of 42 shots in the losing effort. Canadas Chris Mason made 18 saves. "We were outshooting them pretty good all night," Shedden said. "We really carried the play against them." Ritchies goal tied the game at 4-4 at 7:58 of the third period, and Walser beat Sindelar off passes from Anthony Stewart and Metropolit at 13:47 to pull Canada ahead for good. Bolduc opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 2:30 of the first period, but Kucsera responded with a goal for the Czech club team less than two minutes later. Canada took the lead again on Metropolits goal, and Vitkovice replied to take a 2-2 tie into the first intermission. The second period proved costly for Canada when a turnover gave Vitkovice a 4-3 lead 11 seconds after DuPont tied the game 3-3 on a power play. Shedden said the mistake could be chalked up to unfamiliarity between his players, whove had just one practice and one morning skate together before their first game. "The problem was we gave up some easy scoring chances off some miscues and thats going to happen with guys who havent played together, and it happens every night anyway if you have played together." Shedden said. "I thought their goalie really kept them in it because we really crashed the net all night, and it showed the heart of the Canadians. "We were down going into the third period and we thought we were playing well enough, we just had to keep at it and we did that. You work hard enough eventually youre going get rewarded with a couple goals." Canada plays host HC Davos on Saturday. Rennie Stennett Jersey . Over 15 seasons, hes twice won a league championship, been named a Grey Cup and CFL MVP and is one of just five players ever to surpass the 50,000-yard passing plateau. But even with 17 years of pro football under his belt -- he also played in the NFL with Green Bay and Chicago -- the 39-year-old Texan will experience a career first Friday night when he leads the expansion Ottawa Redblacks (0-2) into their first-ever game at TD Place Stadium against the Toronto Argonauts (1-2). Watch the Redblacks vs. Argonauts live tonight on TSN and TSN GO at 7pm et/4pm pt. "Ive never been in this position before," Burris said following Thursdays practice. "I played in the first Monday night game following 9/11 (Green Bays 37-0 win over Washington on Sept. 24, 2001), Ive played in Grey Cups and those were some pretty emotional times for me. "But I can just imagine how emotional and how much energy is going to be in this stadium and this entire city. I know this fanbase has waited since 2005 to have a true home game and a true home stadium. Its an honour to be here and able to be part of this team to break ground as far as getting this organization and city back into football." Not since the former Renegades in November 2005 has a CFL team played a home game in Ottawa and the city hasnt celebrated a Grey Cup winner since 76 when Tony Gabriels historic TD catch rallied the Rough Riders to a thrilling 23-20 victory over Saskatchewan. But a sellout gathering of 24,000 will be on hand for the Redblacks inaugural home game. "Its a big deal and weve been waiting for this day for a long time.," said Ottawa head coach Rick Campbell. "Weve had a bunch of firsts over the last several months as far as whats gone on with our franchise and (Thursday) will be a big night and were definitely proud of it." Its only fitting that Burris achieve a career first going head-to-head with Toronto quarterback Ricky Ray. The two had many memorable battles when they were with the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos, respectively, and last year Burris led the Hamilton Tiger-Cats past the Argos in the East Division final. "I feel like were in The Matrix, we keep following each other," Burris said. "It seems in the most special moments, we always go against each other. "Hes done a lot of great things in his time and I hope thats a two-way street. When we see each other on the sidelines we want to beat each other." But Ray has much more to be concerned about than outplaying Burris. Toronto will be minus its top three receivers in Chad Owens (foot), Andre Durie (clavicle) and Jason Barnes (knee), meaning youngsters Anthony Coombs, Terrell Sinkfield and Darvin Adams will all start versus Ottawa. "Thats going to be tough," Ray said. "Any time you dont have a starter in the lineup you cant rely on the production youre used to getting. "With these guys, theyve been here, theyve been through training camp, they know the offence.dddddddddddd Its just about being out there and not thinking too much when theyre playing and trying to avoid some of those mistakes and be able to play fast. Until you have that game experience together, you dont know what to expect. Were all going to be out here learning a little bit, hopefully we can get it done." Veteran Ottawa defensive back Jovon Johnson said it doesnt really matter who the Argos have at receiver because Ray is the key to their offence. "He takes the passes that you give him, he doesnt force things downfield," Johnson said. "He doesnt do things hes not accustomed to doing, thats what makes him great. "To not have guys like Chad Owens and Andre Durie, Im sure thats big for them because they go to Owens and Durie a lot. Its one of those unknown things, you dont know who theyre going to play and just have to be ready for whatever comes your way." With Ottawas first home game generating such a huge buzz here -- a pep rally was held Thursday at city hall -- the Redblacks will definitely have the home-field advantage as they search for their first-ever win. However, that also means therell be a lot of pressure on them to perform well. "Hopefully its loud and exciting," Argos head coach Scott Milanovich said. "Our guys are looking forward to playing in the new stadium being kind of the first show in town." Toronto receiver John Chiles, who played collegiately at Texas, said a big, loud crowd can dramatically impact the outcome of a game. "Im expecting it to be crazy, Im expecting it to be loud, Im expecting the fans to be up and screaming and having a good time," Chiles said. "In college I played before 110,000 people every week and I remember when it got loud it got tough for teams and they struggled against us. "And even at some away games it was tougher for me being on the road. The crowd can definitely have an effect on the game." However, Chiles said the Argos arent looking to play the spoiler role. "No, we try not to use that term," he said. "Were just focusing in on what we need to do to win and not get too involved with the extra stuff." Campbell said while hes looking forward to the Redblacks having a rabid home crowd firmly behind them, its important his players avoid being swept up in that emotion. "We just have to make sure we keep our heads about us," he said. "I know this is going to be a great place to be, we just need to make sure were good on our assignments and what were doing and go out there and play football." That wont be a problem for Johnson. "Im never nervous," he said. "Im always even-keeled, thats just me and my personality. I always want to perform and never feel pressure on the field. "You cant look at it as extra pressure. Id call it added incentive for us to go out and play well and give them (fans) a team they can look forward to." ' ' '
The Minnesota Wild aim to stay alive in their Western Conference first round series on Monday, as they host the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6 at Xcel Energy Center. You can watch the game on TSN and TSN GO at 8:30pm et/5:30pm pt. Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo joins the NHL on TSN Panel to offer his analysis on the game. Playing at home has meant everything so far in this best-of-seven series, with the host winning the first five tests. Colorado broke a 2-2 deadlock with an OT win in Saturdays Game 6 at the Pepsi Center, and the Wild hope the trend holds true again tonight. If Minnesota can extend the series on Monday, a decisive Game 7 will be played Wednesday in Denver. Colorado, however, could have star forward Matt Duchene back in Game 6. Duchene, who has been sidelined since March 29 with an injured left knee, practiced Sunday and will be a game-time decision on Monday. "If he is back its a huge addition for us," Avs forward Ryan OReilly said. "Hes been one of our best players all year, and for me, he really helps create offense playing on a line. He brings so much to the table it makes it a lot difficult for them (opponents)." Duchene led the Avs with 70 points (23 goals, 47 assists) in 71 games this season. The 23-year-old centermans only career playoff action came in a six- game run with Colorado against San Jose in the 2010 conference quarterfinals. Duchene had three assists in those six games. After winning the first two games on home ice, Colorado allowed Minnesota to tie the series at 2-2 with two straight victories in St. Paul. However, the Avalanche were able to regain their advantage on Saturday with a comeback victory. Nathan MacKinnons terrific rookie season continued, as the leading candidate for the Calder Trophy scored 3:27 into OT to lift Colorado to a 4-3 win in Game 5. MacKinnon also added two assists after being held without a point in consecutive losses at Minnesota. He had a goal and six assists in the first two games at Pepsi Center. Before getting the game-winning marker from MacKinnon, Colorado had to tie the game late in the third period. In a bad break for the Wild, the game-tying goal shouldnt have counted based on video review as Paul Stastny narrowly beat a puck-carrying MacKinnon into the Minnesota zone. However, the play wasnt blown dead for an offside. With play allowed to continue, MacKinnon chipped the puck ahead to Stastny, who snapped a shot from below the left circle that Wild goaltender Darcy Kuemper turned away. Stastny then gathered the rebound and slipped the puck into the slot, where P.A. Parenteau fired the puck home with 1:14 remaining in regulation for his first career playoff goal. "It is what it is, but to sit here and dwell on it, I dont think is going to do us any good," said Wild head coach Mike Yeo. "Obviously frustrating, obviously disappointing, but bottom line is, its not going to do us any good." In overtime, MacKinnon handled a pass from Gabriel Landeskog in the left circle, made a move around Wild defenseman Marco Scandella and scored on a shot to the top right corner. "I was kind of screaming for the puck from Landy. He obviously made a good heads-up play to me," MacKinnon said. "(Stastny) looked great on the forecheck. I kind of just fired it to the net and I dont know if it tipped off one of their defenders or not, but Im definitely very fortunate for the win." MacKinnon (18 years, 237 days) is the second-youngest player in NHL history to score an overtime goal in the playoffs. Don Gallinger was 17 years, 339 days when he scored an OT winner for Boston on March 21, 1943 against Montreal "We knew when we drafted him what kind of player we were drafting, and he had a solid game again tonight," Colorado head coach Patrick Roy said about MacKinnon. Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves for Colorado, but the best save belonged to Avalanche defenseman Nick Holden, who prevented a goal in the extra session by blocking a Matt Moulson shot. Kuemper surrendered four goals on 35 shots after facing a combined 34 shots in the previous two games. This is the third all-time playoff meeting between the clubs. The Wild won a 2003 conference quarterfinals matchup in seven games, while the Avalanche knocked off Minnesota in six games during the same round in 2008. Thirteen of the 18 all-time playoff games between Colorado and Minnesota have been decided by one goal. Fake Vans Website .ca. MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini risks UEFA disciplinary action after an outburst Tuesday against the referee who oversaw their Champions League loss to Barcelona, questioning his partiality and competence. A rare measured voice in the turbulent world of English football since arriving last year, Pellegrini finally lost his cool after Tuesdays 2-0 first-leg loss in the round of 16. City had been repelling Barcelona until the start of the second half when Jonas Eriksson sent off Martin Demichelis for fouling Lionel Messi, who then scored from the penalty spot. Pellegrini was angry that Sergio Busquets was not penalized for an apparent foul on City winger Jesus Navas in the build-up. "The referee decided the game," Pellegrini said. "He decided the game because before the penalty, it was (a) foul on Navas ... but from the beginning I could see the referee was not impartial to both teams. "So he decided the game with the foul he didnt whistle against and after the penalty of Martin Demichelis -- it was not a penalty, it was outside the box." Barcelona has history with Eriksson, who was criticized by then-coach Pep Guardiola for not awarding his team penalties in 2012 in a 0-0 draw at Milan in the quarterfinals. Pellegrini felt Eriksson was trying to make amends for "an important mistake against Barcelona in a previous match." And after the Etihad Stadium game, which saw Dani Alves add a late second, Pellegrini confronted Eriksson to tell him what he thought of his abilities as a referee. The Chilean believes that Eriksson lacked the credentials to referee a match of this magnitude despite taking charge of games at the 2012 European Championship, the 2013 UEFA Super Cup and being on the FIFA list for the World Cup in Brazil. "He did not have any control of the game," Pellegrini said. "It was not a good idea to put a referee from Sweden in (charge) of such an important match ... maybe that kind of game needs a referee with more experience." For suggesting the referee set out to favour Barcelona, Pellegrini is likely to be contacted by UEFAs disciplinary department, and faces a fine or touchline-ban. Dick Groat Jersey . He scored two highlight-reel goals in a three-minute span -- the second on a sideways bicycle kick in the 78th minute -- to give the Whitecaps a 2-2 draw with the Portland Timbers before a crowd of 20,303 at B.ALAMEDA, Calif. - For a general manager who preaches building through the draft, Reggie McKenzie has struggled to find impact players his first two years in Oakland. With all of his picks on the first two days for the first time in three drafts with the Raiders, McKenzie is looking to add players who can be part of the foundation of the rebuilding project in Oakland. "Its my goal and the Raiders goal to hit on my picks, and to be right in everything we do," he said. "This year, Im more excited. I cant call it pressure. Im more excited because of the foundation that weve built this off-season." The Raiders enter the draft with the fifth overall pick and also have choices near the top of the second, third and fourth rounds. Oakland has traded its fifth- and sixth-round picks away but does have three selections in the seventh round. The Raiders didnt pick until 95th overall in 2012 because of previous deals. But McKenzie was unable to find any hidden gems as none of the six players selected started a single game last season. Oakland had premium picks a year ago, but first-round cornerback D.J. Hayden was hampered as he recovered from heart surgery and struggled in his limited playing time. Second-round offensive lineman Menelik Watson barely made it on the field because of injuries. "I want to get it right every year, with every pick," McKenzie said. "Will you be 100 per cent right? Absolutely not." Here are five things to watch with the Raiders when the draft starts Thursday night: QUARTERBACK QUANDARY: The Raiders entered the off-season in need of finding a starting quarterback. After trading a sixth-round pick for Matt Schaub in March, McKenzie no longer needs to fill that hole through the draft. "Thats still a position that well look at, but I think what it does is, you dont feel that pressure that you have to go out there and try and draft a quarterback," coach Dennis Allen said. "You kind of let everything fall to you now." WIN NOW: The Raiders have spent the first two years under the leadership of McKenzie and Allen tearing down the franchise after years of poor management under late owner Al Davis.dddddddddddd. Now they are in the rebuild mode, but owner Mark Davis is losing patience after consecutive four-win seasons. McKenzie said that does not put pressure on him to find players who can contribute immediately. "You draft for the future," McKenzie said. "You dont draft for right now. Thats not the way I do it." GOING DEEP: One of the deepest positions in this draft is receiver, where more than a dozen players are projected to go in the first three rounds. Even after adding veteran James Jones in free agency, the Raiders could look for a playmaker in the draft. Clemsons Sammy Watkins is considered the best of the group, but the Raiders also could wait to get a quality receiver in the second or third round. "If I feel like this guy is an impact player, Im not going to bypass him just because theres some other good, solid receivers," McKenzie said. "When youre comparing great to good, Id rather have great." DRAFT DEALINGS: McKenzie has not been shy about making draft-day trades. He has moved down in the draft four times in his first two years to add additional picks, including dropping nine spots in the first round last year to take Hayden 12th overall and add the pick for Watson in the second round. "Thats what makes it fun — the uncertainty," he said. "But I cannot plan that at all. I can just be hardheaded and stubborn and say, Im not moving. But thats not my style." UNDRAFTED GEMS: A GMs work is not done once Mr. Irrelevant is picked. McKenzie has done a good job finding some gems in the undrafted free agent market with receiver Rod Streater, quarterback Matt McGloin, punter Marquette King and offensive lineman Lucas Nix all making contributions the past two years after joining Oakland as undrafted free agents.
