AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- At times, Georgia State wearing blue-and-white uniforms confused Air Force coach Troy Calhoun. His team still passed this test with flying colors.Tim McVey returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and scored on an 18-yard run, helping Air Force beat Georgia State 48-14 on Saturday for the Falcons 14th straight home victory. Its easy to see why Calhoun sometimes didnt know whether to cheer or yell: The Falcons (2-0) usually wear blue and white, but donned a new gun-metal gray jersey for this game.Kept me off guard, Calhoun cracked.Same with QB Nate Romine, who threw a pass into the vicinity of a receiver wearing the traditional Falcons color scheme, only to realize that wasnt a good thing.I was like, `Well theres blue and white there, so maybe it will be good? said Romine, who rushed for 124 yards on 20 carries. It was awesome to be able to rock these unis.Outside of their opening drive, the Panthers (0-2) couldnt generate any sort of offense. They finished with six first downs -- and none on the ground. Its the fewest first downs allowed by Air Force since 1966, the team said.We just played well, cornerback Jesse Washington casually said.Receiver Tyler Williams added two rushing TDs for Air Force, which hasnt lost at Falcon Stadium since Nov. 21, 2013, against UNLV. Its the longest home winning streak in team history.Georgia State (0-2) struggled on special teams, giving up McVeys kick return, shanking several punts and allowing Air Force to recover an onside kick moments after the Falcons scored to start the second half. The Falcons cashed that bold move in with Williams 2-yard score to make it 41-14.The Panthers couldnt contain Air Forces offense. The Falcons scored points on seven of their first nine drives and finished with 531 total yards. They dominated time of possession (45:14 to 14:46).I thought this week we made some strides, Calhoun said. Weve got an awful lot of room to still grow and develop. On its first drive, Georgia State went to the air and caught Air Force by surprise. The drive culminated with a one-handed TD grab by tight end Ari Werts. But the lead lasted all off 13 seconds as McVey caught the kickoff near the goal line and took it back without being touched. It was the first kickoff return for a score by Air Force since Oct. 9, 2010, against Colorado State. It was a series of us hurting ourselves and not coming through and making plays when we need to, Georgia State coach Trent Miles said. You had opportunities, but then you dont convert on them and you go three-and-out. Your defense is out on the field and they wear your butt down.THE TAKEAWAYGEORGIA STATE: The big plays were there, but the Panthers either let catchable passes drop through their hands or the ball was slightly overthrown. They start 0-2 for the third time in five seasons.AIR FORCE: Favored by 20 1/2 points, the Falcons got on track after a sluggish start. The real challenge is this: They cant get caught looking past their next opponent to a looming showdown with Navy on Oct. 1.BIRD WATCHThe Falcons honored 2008 graduate and standout defensive back Carson Bird , whos fighting a rare form of bone cancer that led to the amputation of his left leg a few months ago. Bird led the team out of the tunnel Saturday. Its overwhelming the amount of support -- the way the program has supported me, the way the school has supported me, Bird said.FULLBACK POWERShayne Davern and D.J. Johnson kept the clocking moving with one successful fullback dive after another. The tandem combined for 36 carries for 141 yards. Davern also scored a TD.They arent some kind of pretty, dazzle you, highly glamorous runs, Calhoun said. But they help with efficiency.UP NEXTGEORGIA STATE: Travel to No. 10 Wisconsin for the second of three straight road games. The Panthers dont play at home again until Oct. 8.AIR FORCE: After a bye, open Mountain West play in two weeks by traveling to Utah State. David Desharnais Jersey .C. Lions has come to an end. Banks told TSN on Jan 2 that he had no interest in playing out the option year of his contract with the Lions in 2014, and he again made that clear in a conversation with Lions GM Wally Buono last week. Brady Skjei Jersey . Fellow centre Pavel Datsyuk remains out because of a concussion. Zetterberg has 11 goals and 19 assists for a team-high 30 points, and Datsyuk has a team-high 12 goals and 11 assists. http://www.cheapnewyorkrangersjerseys.com/?tag=adidas-paul-carey-jersey .C. -- Glenn Howard needed an extra end to move into the Masters Grand Slam of Curling final. Mike Gartner Jersey . The 18-year-old American had five birdies in her bogey-free round for a 17-under total of 196. Lee held the overnight lead but mixed three birdies with two bogeys for a 70. Jeff Beukeboom Jersey . He said Tuesday thats a big reason why he is now the new coach of the Tennessee Titans. Whisenhunt said he hit it off quickly with Ruston Webster when interviewing for the job Friday night. Last season was a mixed bag for Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff.Yes, the Jets were able to draft Patrik Laine with the second overall pick in June, landing a potential franchise-changing player. But it was a miserable ride to get there. The end result of the year to draft a player like that is exciting, Cheveldayoff said. The process of getting there is certainly agonizing. Were very fortunate to have won the draft lottery, to have the opportunity to pick second. When you have an opportunity like we did, to pick a Patrik Laine in the spot we did, those are things that help accelerate the process (for) an organization. The 18-year-old Laine is coming off of a year in which he scored 17 goals and 33 points in 46 games for Tappara of the Finnish League. A right winger, he has drawn comparisons to Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and he held his own just fine for Finland at the World Cup of Hockey.Unlike Ovechkin, who was essentially a one-man team in his rookie year of 2005-06, Laine joins a Jets squad with Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler, Dustin Byfuglien, Bryan Little and Mathieu Perreault -- players who should allow Laine time to develop without having the responsibility of carrying the Jets on a nightly basis.Theres a lot of value to that, Cheveldayoff said. The different paths the players had. A guy like Blake Wheeler, who was a high draft pick and (had) a lot of expectations. Now hes at the pinnacle of his career with what he accomplished last year from an offensive perspective and, obviously, from a leadership perspective. Some things to watch for this season from Winnipeg:IN TROUBAOne of the hallmarks of Cheveldayoffs tenure as GM has been his stockpiling of young players. Now, he is faced with parting with one. Through his agent, defenseman Jacob Trouba publicly requested a trade during training camp. Trouba, 22, had six goals and 15 assists in 81 games last season, although the right-handedd shooter was often put on the left side in his pairing.ddddddddddddGOAL DRIVENOndrej Pavelec, Connor Hellebuyck and Michael Hutchinson all saw significant time in goal for the Jets last season. Pavelec compiled a 2.78 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in 33 games. Hellebuyck recorded 2.34 GAA and .918 save percentage in 26 games, while Hutchinson had a 2.84 GAA and a .907 save percentage. So is the No. 1 job up for grabs? Cheveldayoff said he is looking for someone to step up.SPECIAL TEAMSOne of the reasons the Jets dropped 21 points in the standings last season was the poor play of their specialty units. Winnipeg had the leagues worst power play and the 25th ranked penalty kill. Were the problems schematic or execution? If you ask (head coach) Paul (Maurice) how his summer was, Im sure a lot of it was spent in the computer looking at different things with regards to those type of situations, Cheveldayoff said.MAKING HIS MARKOne of the bright spots for the Jets in 2015-16 was the play of Mark Scheifele. The seventh overall pick in the 2011 draft played in 71 games and finished with 29 goals and 32 assists for 61 points. The Jets possess a formidable top line with Scheifele in the middle and Wheeler on right wing.WHEELING AND DEALINGWheeler, the 6-foot-5, 225-pound right wing for the Jets, finished last season with 26 goals and 78 points in 82 games, which helped the 30-year-old make Team USA for the World Cup of Hockey. While the U.S. bowed out meekly with three straight losses in the preliminary round, Cheveldayoff believes playing in the international tournament could benefit Wheeler.Youre going to grow from it, Cheveldayoff said. Ultimately Team USA didnt have the success they wanted but its an honor to be part of those groups, and its an experience you can always bank on. ' ' '
